Liquid Editing

Training | General Effects & Transitions   | Capture Issues  |  Backup & Media Management  | Still Photos

Editing is by far what LIQUID is all about - including DVD authoring straight from the ti(meline.  It is a top notch professional editing system requiring a powerful computer with horsepower and  storage and video power.  Commands are generally "a right click" away - shortcutting even the more expensive editing programs.  HD editing right on the timeline.  Assignable short cut keys really speed your work - and allow you to customize Liquid like your "previous" favorite editor.

A good editor is one who knows his editing program well - one who knows how to use shortcut keys and the keyboard, and who knows when the program is responding  correctly and when it needs to be shut down and restarted.

No doubt Liquid will become your favorite editor once you learn it's interface. You can learn it on your own, but tutorials are generally considered the best way to go. There are free ones and commercial ones. You can learn from both. Check out some of them here. If you want to be good, you need to invest the learning time.

It takes practice and practice and practice. Keep working at it. Asks questions. Check the web boards (Avid & Pinnacle). Unless you are trying to do compositing, more than likely LIQUID can do it.

How did you create the Transition used in FOV? The one that looks like handwriting scrolling up the screen and the shining to the next clip. I have looked at all of the MDE and ETK libraries trying to find it. Please Help!

6 Loading Classic 6 Editor instead of new drop down interface
If you want to load the classic editor interface from a Desktop icon, create the icon (Ctrl and drag from Liquid 6 icon), right click on the icon, open properties and add the following after edition.exe  /skin=c_skin /nomenu
6 Changing Default Transition
To change the transition used (defaults to "Cross Dissolve GPU"), copy the transition of choice to a Rack, select it, CTRL-Right click on it and select "Set as System Object" then "EDL Default DVE". This object is then used instead.

Note: version 5 does not have this feature

  Adding Transitions for Many Photos
Method 1 - Group select clips on the timeline. Click on the "Add Dissolve" picon on the toolbar. A cross dissolve will be added to every cut transition in the sequence according to your options.  There is an option for applying to only a marked range as well of the whole sequence if you need.  This function is really great for still images, as they don't need any pre or post trimming, there is always enough leeway in a still.

Method 2 - You can use the 'q' and 'w' keys (or whatever shortcut keys you have assigned to move to previous/next event) to move between the edit points and then use the '\' key to drop in your dissolve. If it isn't a dissolve you want to do, you can copy the FX you want use 'qw' and then ctrl-v to paste it to your next edit.
  Activate/Deactivate Tracks for editing
Edits occur only on active tracks in FilmStyle and Overwrite modes. Tracks that are not active will not be affected by cuts or moves. You can set a shortcut key to activate/deactivate all tracks. It is essential in Edition to master activate/deactivate tracks.
Use the Set In and Set Out markers on the timeline to do edits
If you want an edit to fit into the timeline, either to replace existing clips (overwrite) or to expand the existing timeline (filmstyle), set an in and out on the timeline and then set an in on the clip in the Source Viewer (that's a three point edit), make sure your track for delivery is active and set as the video track, make sure your playline is where you want the insert, and click
Dragging a clip from the Source Viewer
Use CTRL + drag to get clip from source viewer to timeline

Applying an effect to several clips at once
    1. Segments containing clips have to be contiguous
2. Set an In and Out marker on the timeline to include all the clips
3. Make sure only the tracks that the clips are on are active  (they have to be contiguous tracks).
4. Create a container
5. Add the effect to the container.

  Locating "gaps" in the timeline
    1. Right click on tool bar
2. Choose the "Player" menu
3. Select "Go to next gap" or "Go to previous gap"
4. Take appropriate action if gaps are located
How to Delete "gaps" in the timeline
Quickest way is to be in filmstyle mode, activate all tracks, right click on segment slice(s) (top of timeline) and choose set in and out mark, then choose Delete Between MarkIn/MarkOut.

Alternative is to to be in Overwrite Mode, activate all tracks having clips you want moved, place playline on first clip after gap, choose Select After Playline, then drag all the clips back to fill the gap.

For those with 6.0, there is a new command - Delete to next Edit.  Very Nice.

  Normalizing Sound
5.5 and 5.62 do not have this effect. With v6 however there are several vst plugins that can accomplish what you are talking about. (Preniere has a filter that will normalize sound - meaning cut out peaks bring volume to a even level). LE 5.5 and LE 6 have the "maximizer" audio FX, which is, I believe, kind of combination of a normalizer and dynamic processor. The results you get from it are excellent.

In LE 6 the effect is in >Effect library >Classic Clip FX >Audio.
  Three Point Edit

(to replace an undesired clip or to fill in a gap without moving other clips)

  1. Deactivate ALL tracks EXCEPT track that is to be changed
  2. be in overwrite mode
  3. set in and out  on timeline of clip to be replaced
  4. place new clip in SOURCE viewer
  5. mark in  OR  out spot and send to timeline

Coping a Keyframe property to another or ALL Keyframes

You can copy a keyframe's specific property setting to another keyframe by dragging the diamond on the right of the property to any keyframe on the editor's timeline.  By dragging the diamond to the editor's video window, the keyframe will be applied to ALL keyframes.

To use a sequence or avi or other media contained in another project from within your current project
    1. Make sure the project containing the segments or media that you want to place in your current project was recently opened.
2. Have your current project opened
3. Right click on LIB and choose the project containing the media
4. Choose the segment / media you want to use in your current project and copy it to the clipboard
5. Right click on LIB and choose current project - then paste the clipboard info in the appropriate rack or timeline.
  Synching Clips

If shooting with a couple of cameras, set a mark on the camera by:
    a loud clap
a flash from a camera flash (I keep one in my bag)

Use Clip Viewer to set marker in clip at point needing coordination
Set a marker on the timeline  at point you want coordination,
Grab marker in clip and drag and snap to the timeline marker.

Link Masking?   Replace one object with anothere

Customize your keyboard and keep the settings even if you  reinstall or repair
After starting Edition, choose EXIT and then LOG ON AS ANOTHER USER.  Choose NEW user and give yourself a name.  Then edit your keyboard settings via the control panel and make adjustments - put your favorite keys in a familiar spot - here are a few suggestions:

Z and X - move to next event left or right
Up and Down arrow - increase or decrease timeline size
Left and Right arrow - move 1 frame on timeline
ALT+Left and Right arrow - more 10 frames on timeline
Shift+Up arrow - Cut

You get the idea - but the key is logging on as yourself before making any changes. All this is saved automatically but you can also save the user profile to a 3.5" disk (look under program files/pinnacle/liquid/user name) and take it with you if you use someone else's system.  And the really beauty is that if you need to reinstall or repair (heaven forbid), since you are no longer the default user, your specially named profile settings do not get deleted or replaced.

  Renaming a project
You want to to rename a project - but with Liquid's file structure you are not quite sure how to do it. When you want your project to have a different name use "Save a copy", save it under the name you  want,  and then open the copy.

Watch Avid's Promo - Great for seeing the use of multiple transitions / effects changing on the beat of the Music - it is the first part of this stream - goes about 3 minutes.

and Watch Marcelo Traverso M's   (MTM)  "Coffee" Promo - again - great use of  transitions / effects - starts about 29:15 and goes to 32:00 - about 3 minutes - about 2/3's down the timeline of the stream - doesn't take long to find.

Watch Digital Juice's DJTV series - particularly  the Field of View,  TAKE 5 and PRODUCTION NOTES series - you will see DJ transistions talked about as well as demonstrated in the actual productions.
