Adobe CS3 Premier Pro Editing

Training | General Effects & Transitions   | Capture Issues  |  Backup & Media Management  | Still Photos

To help one switch from LIQUID - my beloved editing program - to Adobe CS3 -I am starting some new links -  because the future of LIQUID is not looking bright to me (as of Nov,2007) At best it looks like Pinnacle will replace  Liquid with a new editing program (name and price to be determined) down the road - but that could be a while (24 months).  And it appears it will be not be at the "professional" level that Liquid is.  The good news is that at worst, Liquid will remain as it is - no upgrades, no further HD support,  no OS support past XP, etc. - but still a great editing tool.

So I am learning Adobe CS3 - and it is not that different than Liquid.  The emphasis in these links will be how I learned CS3 coming from Liquid - so that Liquidians can have some help in making a switch.

First thing I found was that Liquid's splitting out audio and video up front was a real editing blessing - especially in trying to edit in CS3. As was Liquid's ability to copy clip instances from the timeline back to a rack. As well as was some of Liquid's editing shortcut keys.

Anyway - this will be a work in progress - so it will not be real smooth as the pages getting developed in line time.

Project will only capture like footage -  to Capture in HD or SD
a In CS3....create a new project with the 4:3 settings. Import your 16:9 Project into that new 4:3 project. Then either drag your 16:9 sequence onto the 4:3 timeline - or copy and paste all the clips in the 16:9 sequence into the 4:3 sequence.

In CS4 you can create sequences of different formats in the same projec

My Method of Learning CS3 Keyboard Shortcuts

First - learn the right terminology. Liquid has it's own, and so does CS3.

some examples...
Next Event in Liquid is Next Edit Point in CS3

Learn how to switch back and forth between different panels - this keeps you from always having to grab the mouse:

shift +3 = timeline

Shift +2 = source viewer

  Learn the Selection Tool shortcuts

V Selection Tool- this is the general mode you will work in moving around the timeline

A -Track Select - this lets you select ALL the clips after the playline or CTI (Current timeline indicator) for the current selected tracks.  A <shift>A lets you select ALL CLIPS on ALL Tracks.

U - Slide Tool

Use keyboard shortcuts for moving around on the timeline

I like to use the up and down arrow keys combined alone or combined with the Shift, Ctrl and ALt keys to do a lot of timeline and editing  movements.

If you are used to up down arrows GROWING / SHRINKING your timeline in Liquid - those keys are preset in CS3 and are unchangeable (they are used  to move back and forth along the timeline)  - so I choose SHIFT+up or SHIFT+dn instead.

  Left       UP           DOWN   RIGHT
None  moves CTI 1 frame to the left ZOOM in (Grows) timeline  Zoom out (Shrinks) timeline  moves CTI 1 frame forward
SHIFT moves CTI 5 frames to the left     moves CTI 5 frame forward
CTRL moves CTI to Previous Edit Point Razor Cut Ripple Delete moves CTI to NEXT Edit Point
ALT

  D
None
SHIFT
CTRL Insert Default Transition
ALT

  Action -

They will not be linked, so focus on the audio clips, and the ALt+.(period) will move right 1 frame

Move an Audio Clip that is out of sync (an imported M2V video and audio clip (seperate))

ALT + . (period)   OR ALT + , (comma) Moves focused audio clips right or left

Wjhat is a ripple delete - delete selected clip and roll down the timeline

New Sequence - File / New

In Liquid, going to the next event is the next clip or clip mark or timeline mark.

In CS3 - there is no NEXT EVENT - but moving about is broken into 4 distinct types of markers

  • Timeline Marks
  • Encore Marks
  • Edit Points ( beginning and ending of any clip)
  • Clip Marks (marks on individual clips)

go the next clip (edit point) on timeline (pg up / pg dn)

go to next clip marker (ctrl+shift+->) (WITHIN A CLIP ONLY)

go to the next sequence marker (ctrl + ->)

  INSERT vs OVERLAY mode

in Liuqid, you would choose one or the other - and probably switch back and forth between modes as you edited (as well as activating/deactivating tracks) - depending on the task you were doing.  If you were insert editing or moving clips around, you would generallty be in INSERT mode with all tracks activated.

In Premiere - you are always in OVERLAY mode - unless you tell it differntly.

  Editing usually

  Working with Tracks
First of all - there are definite VIDEO tracks and Audio Tracks (not capable of being both)

Activating All Tracks

  Dissolve Transistions
  Select all clips after playline
  • To select all clips that exist on and after a certain time on one track, select the Track Select tool  (keyboard A) and click the clip at the beginning of the time span you want to select. Shift‑click with the tool to select clips in all tracks.

  White or Black Flash transition
Effects/Video transition/Disolve  - then choose Dip to White, Dip to Black,  Additive Dissolve   - very simple

  Using Hollywood FX's inside Premier

Copy the .vfx plugin from folder Pinnacle\HollywoodFX5\Host Plugins\Liquid to  PPRO\Plugins\en_US, and then rename the etension .vfx to .prm

    Glossory:
CTI - Current Time Indicator            Playline

  ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS

Copy current title or clip instance and paste it next to the present clip
CTRL with drag clip and release focus, move playline to position, CTRL+C, Ctrl+V

Cutting a clip on one track without affecting the other clips below/above it
activiate one track (Lft Click,  choose activate only), position playline for cut,  Press cut key Select Razor tool (C), position and click

Cutting all clips on all tracks
activate All tracks (Left Click,  choose activate all), position playline for cut,  Press cut key Menu Cip/Razor  (or Ctrl+K)  or Razor Tool (C) + Shift+Click

Cutting clips on specific # of tracks without affecting the other clips not on those tracks
activiate selected tracks (Lft Click,  choose activate all), position playline for cut,  Press cut key CAN't - It's either 1 clip with the razor tool & click or All clips with Clip/Razon

Putting a clip's deleted audio back on the audio track in sync
drag or copy video clip down to audio track  OR
choose clip properties and turn on video  OR
turn on video using A1, A2, V

click on video clip on timeline
Reveal in Project
Drag the related clip from project to a track on timeline,  unlink it, and delete the video
Link the video and remaining audio
right click on time code lower right of clip and Move Into Sync
unlink clips
trim to fit
link clips

You can't change track height No Big deal
Tracks - You can't turn select one or all or none you can turn off a track at a time

STUFF BELOW THIS HAS NOT BEEN EDITED FOR ADOBE CS3 - but I am keeping it to see if I can add answers and new references later

Watch Avid's Promo - Great for seeing the use of multiple transitions / effects changing on the beat of the Music - it is the first part of this stream - goes about 3 minutes.

and Watch Marcelo Traverso M's   (MTM)  "Coffee" Promo - again - great use of  transitions / effects - starts about 29:15 and goes to 32:00 - about 3 minutes - about 2/3's down the timeline of the stream - doesn't take long to find.

Watch Digital Juice's DJTV series - particularly  the Field of View,  TAKE 5 and PRODUCTION NOTES series - you will see DJ transistions talked about as well as demonstrated in the actual productions.
