Digital Juice Transitions

Editor's Took Kit's  (ETK) has lots of effects to use.  Inside the tool kits you will find the  following objects:

  • Lower Thirds - (have alpha's) -both Motion & Static - for titles and motion
  • Backgrounds & Backdrops- (no alpha) -  Motion (Backgrounds) & Static (Backdrops)  - similar to a jumpbacks - but being a part of  ETK generally means there are related graphic sets ( lower thirds, templates, overlays, wipes and mattes)
  • Templates - (no alpha) -  Similiar to backgrounds - but  Templates generally have an area where TEXT can be inserted and somewhat highlighted - which makes them similar to Overlays - but without the alpha channel.
  • Overlays - (has alpha) - and  Motion & Static - which let's a portion of underlying video show through.
  • Full Screen Wipes - has alpha -  usually 4-6 seconds in duration -  with a point between beginning and end (closer to end) where the graphic covers the entire screen. Usually placed on track above adjoining clips.
  • Transition Wipes - similar to a full screen Wipes- but always finish black - so they work well as a track matte. (see below)
  • Motion Design Element  - has an alpha - but the alpha is totally surrounding the element - inside and outside - sometimes could be a frame for text or a revealer - revealers text or underlying elements
  • Mattes - motion and static  (mattes usually either need to go on a track matte track or have a track matte effect applied) - generally the white is an alpha - but can be reversed with track matte filter.
  • Pictures - just pictures about many subjects

Transition Wipes:  Similar to a full screen Wipes- but always finish black - so they work well as a track matte.. Instead of being placed over two abutting clips like the full screen transitions, transition wipes are best placed on a track matte or have a track matte effect applied to them. If placed on a track matte track, the upper clip generally will go to the end of the transition, while the lower clip will start in the middle of the transition (since transition wipes end in black). Remember to turn off the "use alpha channel" propterty for the transitional wipe clip.

For all the above, I always render out as a TGA image sequence with embedded alpha. PNG will work ok for some of the above - but for sure does not work for me for Full Screen Transitions.  So I just do everything as TGA image sequence with embedded alpha.
