| Duplicating and Labeling DVD's
|
In general, everyone agrees that "printable" DVD's are the best way to go -
and that LABELS should be avoided on DVD's.
Taiyo Yuden DVD's get high ratings, as do
Ritek's. Amongst individual printers, Epson R200 & R300 series gets a lot of
recommendations. Duplicators allow for unassisted replicating and some even
print the labels as well. Some people make their own duplicators - but of the
for sale ones, seems like Bravo's are high on the recommended list. High on the
independent label program listing is "Sure Thing".
From Steve Bellan:
Nice to see everyone again. 2006 LI east anyone?
I just finished working on a feature film shot with 4 Viper Film Stream
systems. Interesting cameras...er..computers ;-)
Thought I'd add my $.02. I have a 3 bay duplicator (with pioneer drives)
which I can use to make dupes from a DVD master or connect to my NLE and
dupe from there. (I think of this as a back up in-case my NLE's DVD burner
goes down). I think my biggest one-time run so far has been about 50 units.
I use an epson r200 for printing labels. Takes about 90 sec's to print a
complilcated-multicolored label.
I use Fuji 8x, print to center, inkjet printable discs, white surface,
haven't tried silver yet. Also Maxell, Ritek and Beall products and have had
no complaints or returns. I buy from
www.edgewisemedia.com and
www.taperesources.com
I use "SureThing" software to create my printing design, then export to
epson's software for sizing and to print from.
Cheers
Steve Bellan

Multi-Purpose machines - like a PrimaVera
These duplicate and print - usually in stacks of 50 - start
it and one at a time it duplicates a disk, starts printing the label while a
second is duplicated, etc. Takes about (how long) to do a stack of 50.
Some duplicators believe a better process is to use a duplicating Tower - and
then a multi-disk printer. There is a bit more hands-on involved in the
duplicating Tower - but overall the speed is said to be a bit quicker.
Multi-Purpose machines - like a PrimaVera
Use a Duplicating Tower
usually come with 1-3 or 4-7 bays
sample would be a Primera DUP-07 - with Plextor dual-layer
dvd burners - approx $1700
Multi-disk Printer
I built an ACARD system. I can burn 6 DVDs at a time.
It works well. If you use a power supply from a case, you have to jumper a
couple pins, with an in line resistor to turn the power supply on without the
presence of a mobo.
It is is simple and easy and it does not tie up your computer while you are
making copies. That is probably the most important thing - you edit on your
$2000+ machine instead of watching it do simple tasks.
Also, I would be suprised if you can burn more than one DVD at a time on your
PC. I have tried a multitude of programs and have had problems with reliability.
Finally, does anyone know of a DVD printer that is any faster than an R200? It
is now my bottleneck.
