C01U - USB Studio Condenser Microphone  $39

From Lew:  The C01U USB Studio Condenser Mic is the first affordable studio condenser mic with a USB interface.

For the first time ever, musicians who record music on computers have a simple, affordable way to capture high-quality vocal and acoustic instrument performances.

Seamless integration was the idea, and it was obtained by creating a studio condenser microphone that can be plugged into any computer with no in/out boxes, no expensive computer pre-amps, just a USB cable.

USB Microphone Snowball Bundle

From Cleaner666 - Here is an excellent quality USB mic, the Blue Snowball. It is better than the others mentioned (CO1U) for about the same price: It doesn't suffer from the driver situation of the Samson. Also, the Samson is not as full sounding as this mic.

Blue Snowball USB - $80

SHURE SM58   $ 104  Dynamic - Cardioid polar pattern
Consistently the first choice of performers around the globe, the SM58 vocal microphone is a genuine world standard and a true audio legend. The Shure SM58 is a unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic vocal microphone designed for professional vocal use in sound reinforcement and studio recording.

A highly effective, built-in, spherical filter minimizes wind and breath "pop" noise. A cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source while minimizing unwanted background noise. The SM58 has a tailored vocal response for a sound that is a world standard. Rugged construction, a proven shock mount system, and a steel mesh grille ensure that even with rough handling, the SM58 will perform consistently. Outdoors or indoors, singing or speech -- the SM58 is the overwhelming choice of professionals worldwide.

Electro Voice RE20  $399 - Dynamic Cardioid Broadcast Microphone

The de-facto standard microphone for talk-radio and voice recording is the ElectroVoice RE-20.  Used on the IMUS IN THE MORNING show, this mic is a broadcast standard for decades
The RE20 is the broadcast studio voice-over mic used by pros for years. The RE20 smooth across a wide spectrum of frequencies, and because it's a Continuously Variable-D mic, it's virtually free of bass-boosting "proximity effect" when used close. An easy "bass tilt down" switch corrects spectrum balance for use in longreach situations or other bass attenuation applications, making it great for acoustic and electric bass and kick drum.

SHURE SM57 - $99  Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
        recommended by Jan Ozer

What can you say about the Shure SM57? It is a tool found in the workbench of every sound engineer, both for live and studio applications. There's simply no question: it's a "must-have" mic.

The SM57 is a cardiod (unidirectional) dynamic microphone with a contoured frequency response of 40 to 15,000 Hz, perfect for clean reproduction of vocals and instruments. But the SM57 is most renowned in the music industry as the standard microphone of choice for snare drums and guitar amplifiers. Go to any stage or studio and you're likely to find SM57s pointing at the amps and snare.

By the way, the '57 has been proudly standing on the podium of the US President for over 30 years, so you can add patriotism to its outstanding attributes! This mic is also known to take a beating and come back for more, so tell your roadie Rocco to have a ball! Its outstanding performance, legendary reliability, and diversity of application make this "workhorse" the choice of performers, producers, and sound engineers the world over.

Sennheiser MD46 - Cardioid Handheld Dynamic ENG Microphone
Unlike traditional handheld mics, the MD46 was designed to be used outdoors in even a slightly windy environment yet still pick up to about a foot away and mostly eliminating anything beyond. It was actually developed for the Olympics in Australia during the track and field events to interview the athletes.

The MD46 handheld cardioid ENG microphone includes features found in today's interview mics, but with studio quality sound, according to the company. The MD46 has a traditional long handle, wind attenuation and off-axis rejection and is designed to possess an extended high-frequency response, warm lows, and a clean midrange. The company developed the new microphone in response to the needs of NBC and the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Omni microphones pick up everything equally, including background noise. The MD46 cardioid interview mic focuses on the subject, increasing clarity. Designed to have low handling and wind noise, and to eliminate vocal popping, this microphone gives the ENG team an ideal interview tool.
